How much CO2 does it take to build a car

Every day another article appears in the media about climate change, carbon offsets, CO2 outputs and the price of petrol. Today it was about the most carbon unfriendly cars in Australia.

Ive searched the net a little - but havent been able to find, some information about the amount of CO2 that is outputted during the building, and transportation of a brand new vehicle. The only link of any value I spotted was this forum thread but it isnt anything conclusive.

What I would like to see is how much CO2 is produced in the construction of a new vehicle, as everyone seems to be touting the line "switch to a new clean car and save the environment". As per the news.com.au link a prius emits an average 1.6 tonnes of CO2, and a commodore 3.8 tonnes.

I suspect that the production of the commodore and even the prius will be many times the yearly emmision value. So how many years do you need to drive your new car just to break "carbon-even"? If anyone has any statistics, id be interested to know.

Then again, we could all just drive an air car running on compressed air. It would solve a world of apparent problems...
