Edit: And I forgot to add - it was so cold today that it snowed all over the place. Inspired by that, I uploaded photos from the last time it snowed at sea level in hobart (back in August 2005).

Car and Health Insuarance - Why do they differ?

As a young male, my car insuarance premium and 'excess' payment in the event of a claim, is significantly higher (the excess in the order of 500% ) than that of a 'non young male' driver. If I was to take out private health insurance, my premium would be the same of that as a 55 year old illicit drug taking, smoking lifestyle induced diabetic.
This article is based around the question-:
Why vary insurance policies and premiums for people when
insuring them against some things, but not others?
As discussed in John Quiggins article written for the Centre for Policy Development the government being the lowest cost risk bearer - means that a government pooling funds for an insurance system is the most 'efficient' way to do so - but for a number of reasons they do not always do so.
It was pointed out to me by Matt that Health Insuarance when compared to Vehicle insuarance is in a different catagory because the right to Health care and the right to live cannot be compared to the possible financial loss that vehicle insuarance might serve to negate.
