Is it possible for politicians to tell the truth?

I am of course biased, and only see what the media present to me on the television, radio and in print.

Belinda Neal held a press conference to announce that "several investigations have proven she did nothing wrong". (abc.net.au coverage or Google News coverage).

She was then asked by reporters (several times, by several reporters) whether she had pressured any of her staffers to change their statutory declarations.

Her response: "I do not intend to make any comments" [regarding that topic].

When asked later, she said something along the lines of "I have already said all I will on that question".

Its politicians and their actions like this, that destroy the reputation for the few respectable representatives still in office.

Its a sad thing that democracy works on all levels, the population at large vote in the politicians on a "majority-wins" basis. When in office, the "majority" of politicians act in any way they see fit and the minority who are genuinely horrified about their behaviours and actions don't have the numbers to enact any sort of change.

Whilst politicians are always stuck between a rock and a hard place (being held to account for whatever they say) it takes a very shallow and ruined person to stand in front of a pack of cameras and make statements like were made today.

Anyone considering entering politics have a think, and a look at politicians across Australia and decide "do i want to be like them". I'm certain that not one of our current elected members had planned to have to lie, deceive and craft their words to manipulate what the public think and know - but most end up doing it. Sad, but true.
